Twan Stiekel
‘Rotterdam, kankerstad/In de oorlog lag ie plat.’ Dat was de eerste poëzie waarmee ik kennismaakte toen ik naar Amsterdam kwam. Misschien had ik geschokt moeten zijn, of beledigd, maar het rijmpje vertelde me niks nieuws. De gehele identiteit van het naoorlogse Rotterdam waarin ik ben opgegroeid, staat in direct verband met het bombardement van toen. De puinhopen van de oude stad, zijn de as waaruit het nieuwe Rotterdam herrezen is. Niks is vruchtbaarder dan as. Uit vernieuwingsdrang werden veel door het bombardement beschadigde gebouwen zelfs niet hersteld, maar gesloopt en vanaf de fundamenten herbouwd. Wie iets nieuws wil, doet er goed aan het oude te vernietigen.
Geen dichter lijkt zich hiervan zo bewust te zijn geweest als Lucebert, die niet lang na de oorlog de poëzie en al haar conventies tot de grond toe afbrandde en naar eigen inzicht heruitvond. Apocrief/De analfabetische naam is Luceberts vroegste bundel en bestaat uit drie delen: ‘apocrief’, ‘de analfabetische naam’ en ‘de getekende naam’. Van het eerste deel valt op dat er veel verwijzingen zijn naar bijbel en kabbala (wat niet vreemd is, want met ‘apocrief’ worden heilige geschriften aangeduid die niet in de bijbel zijn opgenomen); in ‘de analfabetische naam’ gaan opvallend veel gedichten over taal en in ‘de getekende naam’ zal de nadruk liggen op de schilderkunst, want de laatste gedichten dragen de namen van Miro en Klee. Dit onderscheid tussen de bundels is echter vrij willekeurig. Ikzelf maak grofweg het volgende onderscheid tussen de gedichten in de bundel: ‘rioolgedichten’, ‘wensgedichten’ en ‘glossolaliegedichten’. Onder ‘rioolgedichten’ versta ik gedichten waarin wordt omschreven hoe het nu is; ‘wensgedichten’ gaan over hoe het moet zijn; ‘glossolaliegedichten’ gaan in principe nergens over. ‘Glossolalie’ is een wetenschappelijke term voor ‘spreken in tongen’, die ik uit De Roders artikel ‘Het schandaal van de poëzie’ heb overgenomen: ‘het uitstoten van reeksen van klanken zonder enige betekenis’, waaraan toch (religieuze) waarde of betekenis wordt gehecht (43). In dit essay zal ik mijn indeling verder uitwerken; aan de hand van twee rioolgedichten en een wensgedicht zal ik de glossolaliegedichten verklaren. Overigens kan het dat sommige van de gedichten uit de bundel tot geen van deze drie categorieën horen, maar ik denk toch op deze manier de meeste grofweg te behandelen. Ik begin met een analyse van het rioolgedicht ‘vaalt’, dat hieronder volledig staat afgedrukt.

Ik gaf al aan dat ‘vaalt’ een rioolgedicht is. Rioolgedichten kenmerken zich doordat ze een imperfecte situatie schetsen waarmee het lyrisch ik af wil rekenen.
De belangrijkste gebeurtenissen in ‘vaalt’ zijn:
- Het lyrisch ik wordt opgedragen een ‘excrementenplein’ ‘vrij te vegen’.
- ‘excrementen’ blijkt een metafoor te zijn voor lijken; het lyrisch ik schept ze op een kar van het gemeente-energiebedrijf.
- het lyrisch ik wenkt een kind, dat versteent; hij grist het een papieren vlaggetje tussen de tanden vandaan, omdat dat vlaggetje voor hem de natie symboliseert die in zijn ogen ‘verblindend kwaad’ is.
De eerste strofe is overwegend positief. Het ongespecificeerde ‘hij’ is te identificeren als werkgever van het lyrisch ik, het gemeente-energiebedrijf. De opdracht ‘veeg vrij/dit excrementenplein’ heeft een bijbetekenis van bevrijding (en indirect van bezetting); er wordt opgemerkt dat de zon schijnt. Het verdere gedicht is negatief van toon.
‘Flik’ betekent (vandaag de dag) politieagent, een wetshandhaver in staatsdienst, dus ‘flikfabriek’ zou je kunnen duiden als een staatsbedrijf, misschien van een politiestaat. De flikfabriek kan worden opgevat als een metafoor voor het staatsapparaat. De suggestie wordt gewekt dat zo’n fabriek lijken produceert. Dat het lyrisch ik de lijken op een kar van het gemeente-energiebedrijf gooit, suggereert dat de gemeente zich met lijken voedt. Verder lijkt het dat de mensen ziek waren toen ze stierven, getuige de blazen en blauwe kleur; en dat ze al geruime tijd met hun rottingsproces bezig zijn – ‘draden waar eens waren neus en oog.’ De ‘draaiend als een rups/geel van het maal een smalle lach,’ die het lyrisch ik op sommige lijken aantreft, verklaar ik later; de lach slaat een bruggetje naar het gebit van het kind, waartussen het lyrisch ik een papieren vlaggetje vandaan grist, met ‘nationale vingers’, wat beduidt dat ook hij deel uitmaakt van de staat die hij verafschuwt, en hij niet alleen: wij zijn ‘allen aangeraakt/en met het allerkwaadste kwaad getooid’.
De vorm van het gedicht sluit aan op de inhoud. Het rijmschema wisselt. In de eerste drie strofen is steeds bij twee regels sprake van mannelijk rijm, de plaatsing van de regels varieert. Strofes twee en drie, waarin de werkzaamheden van het lyrisch ik beschreven worden, zijn ingekapseld door de woorden ‘op’ en ‘af’, wat er op kan wijzen dat het lyrisch ik zijn werkzaamheden in strofe vier ‘aflegt’. Strofe vier rijmt niet. Deze kondigt een nieuwe rijmvorm aan, namelijk assonantie: ‘i’ in strofe vijf, ‘ooi’ en ‘aa’ in strofe zes, wat impliceert dat iets aan de situatie veranderd is. Aan de strenge indeling in vierregelige strofes verandert echter niets: het gedicht wordt onveranderlijk gevangen gehouden in zijn vorm.
Het is mogelijk in ‘vaalt’ een impressie van de Duitse bezetting te lezen, maar mijn lezing is anders; ik zal hem verklaren door ‘vaalt’ te vergelijken met een ander rioolgedicht, ‘school de poëzie’.
SCHOOL DER POËZIE
ik ben geen lieflijke dichter
ik ben de schielijke oplichter
der liefde, zie onder haar de haat
en erop een kaaklende daad.
lyriek is de moeder der politiek,
ik ben niets dan de omroeper van oproer
en mijn mystiek is het bedorven voer
van leugen waarmee de deugd zich uitziekt.
ik bericht, dat de dichters van fluweel
schuw en humanistisch dood gaan.
voortaan zal de hete ijzeren keel
der ontroerde beulen muzikaal opengaan.

als een rat in de val, snak naar het riool
van revolutie en roep: rijmratten, hoon,
hoon deze nog veel te schone poëzieschool.
Ook het lyrisch ik van ‘school der poëzie’ zit ‘als een rat in de val’ in een systeem waaruit hij geen kans ziet te ontsnappen. De rol van systeem waarin het lyrisch ik gevangen zit, die gemeente en natie spelen in ‘vaalt,’ wordt hier gespeeld door de lyriek. De overeenkomst tussen deze ‘systemen’ wordt door de zin ‘lyriek is de moeder der politiek’ onderstreept. ‘Politiek’ heeft in de context van ‘school der poëzie’ een sterke negatieve bijklank van leugenachtigheid, maar refereert evenzogoed aan de regering: de gemeente en de natie.
Net als bij ‘vaalt’ valt bij ‘school der poëzie’ de strenge vorm van vierregelige strofes op, die weer bij de inhoud van het gedicht aansluit: het gedicht lijkt in haar vorm gevangen te worden gehouden. Beide gedichten zijn opgesloten in een taalstructuur.
Het is niet moeilijk om in het onderdrukkende systeem van ‘school der poëzie’ het systeem van de taal te lezen. Maar ook de natie in ‘vaalt’ kan als het systeem van de taal worden geïnterpreteerd. Dit verklaart met name de vijfde strofe van het gedicht, waarin het lyrisch ik de natie tussen de tanden van een kind vandaan grist: het is de taal die hij tussen de lippen van het kind vandaan rukt. Ook hij is, net zoals het lyrisch ik van ‘school’, ‘niets dan omroeper van oproer’: het lyrisch ik van ‘school’ kan niet anders dan leugens schrijven zoals ook de ‘dichters van fluweel’ doen, en het lyrisch ik van ‘vaalt’ werkt voor de staat die hij verafschuwt en heeft ‘nationale vingers’; en juist daarmee steelt hij de taal uit de mond van het kind, zoals in ‘school’ ook juist leugens worden gebruikt om de deugd mee uit te zieken.
Ook de ‘dichters van fluweel’ van wie in ‘school’ de dood wordt bericht, komen voor in ‘vaalt’. Zij zijn de lijken die het lyrisch ik aan zijn riek rijgt, ziek en rottend, hun huichelachtige dunne lach lachend, een lach die de haat, het verderf dat eronder schuilgaat niet kan maskeren.
De relatie tussen politiek en de leugenachtigheid van taal, zoals ik die hier voorstel, is niet vergezocht: de politici Hitler en Göbbels bewezen de misleidendheid van taal onomstotelijk met hun toespraken, waarmee ze hun gehele natie de Tweede Wereldoorlog in sleurden. Het lijkt mij dus meer dan denkbaar dat Lucebert, of in ieder geval het overkoepelende lyrisch ik van de bundel, de ‘politieke’ taal af wil nemen van het kind, dat dichter bij de oorsprong van de taal staat dan hijzelf, voor wie hij geen mogelijkheid ziet aan de ‘politieke’ taal te ontsnappen. De oorspronkelijke, woordloze taal is het waar Lucebert naar op zoek is; deze wens is het die hij uitspreekt in de gedichten die ik ‘wensgedichten’ noem.
In zijn artikel ‘De analfabetische naam’ merkte Oegema al op dat ‘de analfabetische naam kan duiden op een vorm van spreken die buiten de gesproken en geschreven taal ligt’ (51). Het gedicht dat hem dit deed beseffen, is het wensgedicht ‘er is ik en er is’. Oegema vermeldt als verdienste van De Feijter, dat zij ontdekte dat ‘de lucht verstaat men/maar de mens niet’, een ‘vrije vertaling’ is van een gedichtfragment van Hölderlin. Door de oorspronkelijke context van deze intertekst denkt Oegema te kunnen concluderen dat deze regels slechts een ‘bevestiging’ zijn ‘dat we ons in dit gedicht niet op aardse bodem bevinden’ (57). Oegema’s klakkeloze aanname dat de ‘vertaalde’ tekst in ‘er is ik en er is’ hetzelfde betekent als in het oorspronkelijke gedicht, lijkt mij. Ikzelf zie in deze twee regels van ‘er is ik en er is’ opnieuw Luceberts frustratie over de leugenachtigheid van woorden terug. Woorden zijn niets anders dan trillende lucht, dus wanneer Lucebert schrijft: ‘de lucht verstaat men/maar de mens niet’, dan kan hierin gelezen worden dat woorden ongeschikt zijn om de mens en diens gevoelens mee weer te geven. Verderop in het gedicht schetst Lucebert zijn ideaalbeeld: ‘er laait geen taal/maar donker licht er vaart [...] dat nog taalloos praat’, een ‘analfabetische taal’ die door Oegema zo wordt omschreven: [zij] is volmaakt zuiver, omdat zij volmaakt inhoudsloos is. Dit is de taal van de voorwereld, het oerbegin, van een moment vóór de schepping of vóór de geboorte’ (66).
Lucebert ziet echter geen mogelijkheid deze perfecte taal in zijn eigen poëzie te verwezenlijken. Hij kiest daarom voor een grovere aanpak: hij rukt de taal uit de mond van het kind en schrijft gedichten die klinkklare nonsens zijn en daardoor aandacht vestigen op de leugenachtigheid van de taal. In ‘Anti-modernisme: Lucebert en zijn lezer’ betogen Vaessens en Joosten de betekenisloosheid van Luceberts gedichten. Ook zij moeten echter toegeven dat ‘zeker niet te ontkennen valt’, dat in het werk van Lucebert ‘glasheldere gedachten te vinden zijn’ (214). Wat mij betreft voert het te ver alle gedichten van Lucebert als ‘betekenisloos’ over één kam te scheren. Volgens mij is het een bepaald soort gedichten waarin, zoals Vaessens en Joosten het uitdrukken ‘verzet tegen logocentrisme’ ‘manifest’ is: de gedichten die ik ‘glossolaliegedichten’ noem en waar Lucebert in ‘school der poëzie’ volgens mij aan refereert: ‘mijn mystiek is het bedorven voer/van leugen waarmee de deugd zich uitziekt’. Voorbeeld van zo’n ‘mystiek’ glossolaliegedicht is volgens mij ‘exodus’. Het is een onbegrijpelijke tekst vol verwijzingen zoals die in meer (glossolalie)gedichten in de bundel voorkomen, naar bijvoorbeeld de bijbel, de kabbala of mythologie. Vaessens en Joosten schrijven:
Hoewel hij weet [...] dat zijn lezers de neiging hebben poëzie in de eerste plaats een cognitief karakter toe te kennen, stelt Lucebert soms alles in het werk om zijn gedicht een bijna betekenisloze structuur te laten zijn.
Ik geloof echter niet dat Lucebert betekenisloze gedichten schrijft hoewel hij weet dat lezers de neiging hebben waarde te hechten aan de betekenis van een gedicht, maar juist precies daarom. Lucebert wil de lezer confronteren met de manier waarop we omgaan met taal en poëzie: alsof ze waarheden uitdrukt. Met opzet frustreert hij de lezer door hem te confronteren met de grootst mogelijke onzin en leugens. De verwijzingen naar bijbelse, kabbalaanse of mythische zaken, hebben ditzelfde doel: dit zijn bij uitstek teksten waarvan gedacht wordt dat ze ‘diepere’ waarheden uitdrukken en in een verder onbegrijpelijke tekst klampt de lezer zich juist aan die verwijzingen vast, wanhopig op zoek is naar betekenis. Maar het helpt hem niets: de betekenis is en blijft afwezig. Zo vestigt Lucebert niet alleen aandacht op de leugenachtigheid van zijn eigen taal, maar ook op die van andere teksten.
Lucebert mag zijn eigen gedichten (of zijn glossolaliegedichten) dan omschrijven als ‘bedorven voer [...] waarmee de deugd zich uitziekt’, gevolg van de betekenisloosheid van de gedichten is wel dat van deze gedichten niks anders overblijft dan de ervaring. En juist de ervaring is volgens De Roder datgene wat poëzie tot poëzie maakt. Datgene wat een gedicht een gedicht maakt, zo stelt hij, is ‘voorbij de taal’ (43). Lijkt dat niet erg op ‘een vorm van spreken die buiten de gesproken en geschreven taal ligt’, waar Oegema over sprak? Een taal die ‘volmaakt inhoudsloos’ is, de ‘taal van de voorwereld, het oerbegin, van een moment vóór de schepping of vóór de geboorte’? Betekenisloosheid, die inhoud ondergeschikt maakt aan de ervaring, zien we ook terug bij aftelversjes en slaapliedjes, volgens De Roder ook wel ‘de kinderkamer van de poëzie’ genoemd (32). Met zijn glossolaliegedichten keert Lucebert terug naar de oorsprong van de poëzie. Misschien zonder het zelf te weten, schreef Lucebert met zijn glossolaliegedichten meer dan ‘bedorven voer’: hij schreef gedichten die niets dan gedichten zijn, voorbij de taal. Niet alleen brak Lucebert de poëzie af, hij bouwde haar ook weer op, vernieuwde haar, deed haar uit haar eigen as herrijzen.
