Wat bedoelt men eigenlijk als men zegt: “Hij is zo intelligent want hij denkt/redeneert zo abstract”? Wellicht begrijp ik dit niet door mijn onvermogen tot het maken van abstracte constructies?
Kan iemand een voorbeeld geven? (haha — oh god. Dit is zeker het ultieme niet-abstract-zijn?). Als iemand iets zegt dan vorm ik altijd een beeld, dus hoe kan dan datgene dat gezegd werd abstract zijn?

Tja, het ‘losgerukt van de wereld denken’ (ja, ik heb ook een woordenboek) Het denken dat niet meer een boom ziet dat een koele schaduw werpt, maar 1 meetbare lengte en 2 meetbare hoeken, waarmee de hoogte van de boom kan worden bepaald. (deze boere hadden dat misschien moeten doen: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GkuG_RTS15I&p=9D7972AEB9050FED&playnext=1&index=41)
Jouw gevoel daarover doet er niet zoveel toe. De ‘relevante’ factoren worden uit de brei van de werkelijkheid gezeefd, om daar dan (door middel van algemene wetten) conclusies uit te trekken – die weer van toepassing zijn op de werkelijkheid. Krachtig abstract denken is denk ik dan ook een wisselwerking tussen abstract denken en toepasbaarheid. Dus voorbeelden vind ik zeker niet het ultieme niet-abstract-zijn.
Ik denk trouwens dat abstract denken een mooi hulpmiddel is, maar zeker beperkt is en vaak wordt overschat. Een mooi voorbeeld is Chris Langan (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ggur-Ca2nzs) die een van de hoogste IQ’s ter wereld heeft, maar daar zeer weinig mee heeft bereikt wat voornamelijk te wijten zou zijn aan een gebrek aan praktische intelligentie – “street smarts”. Met het kijken van het filmpje worden nog meer gebreken zichtbaar. Het is dan ook bewezen dat IQ tot een bepaalde hoogte een goede graadmeter is voor het verwachte succes van mensen later in hun leven, maar dat het boven een bepaald punt niet zo veel meer zegt.
IQ tests vind ik trouwens een mooi voorbeeld van het testen van het vermogen tot abstract redeneren.
Ik hoop dat je je abstracte redeneer vermogen aan kunt wenden om uit deze brei iets zinnigs te zeven

OMG wat een sukkel. Ok. Ja, dat had ik abstract kunnen beredeneren dat die boom op zijn auto zou vallen.

Chris Langan vind ik gewoon Hitler. Sorry voor deze vergelijking maar ik ben doodsbang van die man. Het soort van “want met een hoog IQ zouden we beter in staat zijn goede morele beslissingen te nemen”. bla bla. Echt, wat een verschrikkelijk enge man is dat toch. Of hij denkt dat hij God is. Oooohh!!! grrrrrrr.

Ik begrijp het al stukke beter. “Hij is zo intelligent want hij is zo abstract” is dan gedeeltelijk waar, maar we vergeten daarbij dat de toepasbaarheid voor bonuspunten zorgt. Het is dus veel aardiger te zeggen: “Hij is zo intelligent omdat hij iets doet met zijn abstracte verzamelingen van de werkelijkheid”….

sorry dat ik je stalk.Ik was weer even kwijt wat het nou was in je tekst dat ik aan die toets van wetenschapsfilosofie moest denken.

Maar wat ik dan weer denk is dit: Hij is zo intelligent want hij denkt zo abstract = ik ben zo slim, want ik kan zijn abstractie volgen? omdat ik weet dat het abstract IS. Oh nee,dat klopt niet want je weet vaak genoeg dat iets dan abstract is omdat je het niet begrijpt. Ooooops.
Ik denk dat ik maar 3d Tetris ga spelen en daarna een IQ-test ga doen
